Dahlhaus Showroom Entrance

Dahlhaus Lighting produces one-of-a-kind, made to order, custom lighting and accessories since 1966. When you think about vintage European lighting, look no further than Dahlhaus as your manufacturer for “Instant Antiques”.

Our products are crafted as they were 100 years ago, yet with the technological advances of tomorrow that offer you impressive lighting solutions reflecting our dedication to: Original Vintage Design, Highest Quality Materials, Authentic Craftsmanship and Outstanding Service.

For more than fifty years, we have specialized in reviving vintage lighting for residential, commercial and civic sites.

Our line began with a simple carriage light we found in England, built according to a period design. We continued to discover other period designs and castings all across Europe. Today our collection includes many of the street lamps and lanterns, as well as bollards, fountains, ornaments and mailboxes, that once graced Europe’s cities, towns and estates. We take pride in all of our products, knowing that they preserve the elegance and quality craftsmanship of a bygone era. Detailed specifications for each of our products are available upon request.

Casting

Truely Handcrafted

All of our products are custom-made and hand crafted by our skilled artisans in Germany. We try to use as many traditional tools and work process to re-create the authentic look of a bygone era. Our material of choice is Sand-Cast-Aluminum, which will not rust (as Cast-Iron would) while providing exceptional stability at a lower overall weight.

The sand molded casting guarantees an authentic look and feel of the product. Through this method we are able to achieve a slightly imperfect product surface which gives the lanterns, mailboxes and other products their historic look. Because of the traditional manufacturing, our products are of substantial weight. They feel solid and heavy and are “made for eternity”.

During the casting, liquid aluminum is quickly poured into a sand-pressed-mold at a temperature of about 750 Degrees Celsius (1400 F). Each sand mold is held in place by so called mold-brackets that help to center the piece that is cast. While the mold can only be used once, the sand is recycled to be used again many times.

After the casting has cooled down, the mold is destroyed to retrieve the raw aluminum part. At this stage it is still connected to the casting channels which will have to be removed manually. From the foundry the part now goes into the factory to be worked on further.

Assembly
Every Dahlhaus Light-Fixture, Mailbox and Accessory is now grinded, cleaned and drilled to its exact specifications. By pre-constructing every product in the factory, we make sure that it will fit once it reaches our customers homes.

At last we spray paint all our products with a durable protective finish before giving it the color of your choice. Our custom and hand-applied patinas help to bring out the fine details in every casting. We then install the electrical components and glass panels. The glass is held in place by a traditional ‚permanently elastic‘ putty that provides a strong yet flexible bond. From here you can pick up your order in our factory showroom or it will ship to you around the world.
